Around The League

  • Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid faced off yesterday, with the 76ers winning the matchup. Philly’s roster is improved after the Harden trade, with Robert Covington re-debuting for them after 5 years since he was sent to Minnesota in the Jimmy Butler trade. Reigning MVP Joel Embiid was a force against a Suns team with no real size on the interior. Embiid finished with 26 and 11 while shooting 50% from the field (9/18), going perfect from the free throw (5/5) and three point line (3/3). Durant had 31 and 8, but the Suns continue to lose. You’ve got to feel for KD, as Bradley Beal has yet to suit up for the Suns, while Devin Booker has only played in 2. Hopefully they both can get healthy for this contending Suns team.

  • In other news, the Celtics are the last undefeated team left in the league (Tatum also became the youngest Celtic to hit 10k points), and in contrast, the Grizzlies still haven’t won one. The Timberwolves dismantled the Jazz, LaMelo Ball locked up Tyrese Haliburton in the final seconds to win the game (check the announcers reaction to it here), and the Lakers got embarrassed by the Magic again (Jalen Suggs nutmegged Dlo and LeBron got crossed up by Paolo).

  • Injury Updates: CJ McCollum has a collapsed lung and will be out for awhile. Terry Rozier suffered a groin injury and had to be helped off the court, so he’s likely to miss time. Wendell Carter Jr. suffered a fractured hand and underwent surgery, so he’ll be out for 3 weeks. Devin Vassell (groin) will be out “for a while” according to Gregg Popovich. Nic Claxton and Cam Johnson have both been ruled out for the foreseeable future with foot injuries. We wish all these guys speedy and successful recoveries.

Trade News

  • The Nets signed Keon Johnson, looking to add some wing scoring and defense. Look for more moves sooner than later with names like James Harden being moved and Malcolm Brogdon looking to be moved in the coming weeks.

  • The Free Agent market is still deep with vets like Isaiah Thomas, Dwight Howard, Rudy Gay, Blake Griffin, Montrezl Harrell (he’ll be out for a few months), and John Wall ready to contribute to winning or to mentor young guys. There are a few younger names on the market, like Kai Jones (yikes), Kevin Porter Jr (yikes again), Sharife Cooper, and Darius Bazley.
