Victor Wembanyama had a career-high 50 points and the San Antonio Spurs had a 139-130 victory over the Washington Wizards. Wembanyama was 8 for 16 on 3-pointers, also setting a career high, as San Antonio won its second straight. Jordan Poole had 42 points for Washington, which lost its sixth straight. At 20 years 314 days, Wembanyama is the fourth-youngest player to score 50 points, trailing only Brandon Jennings (20/52), LeBron James (20/80) and Devin Booker (20/145). Wembanyama's previous high was 49 points in a 130-126 overtime victory over New York. Wembanyama made at least six 3-pointers for the third straight game. Devin Vassell had 17 points in his third game for the Spurs since returning from offseason surgery to repair a fractured right foot.
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 59 points to pace the Milwaukee Bucks to a 127-120 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons. It was a league-high for points by an NBA player this season and the second-highest single-game total for Antetokounmpo, who had 64 against Indiana last season. Antetokounmpo hit 21 of 34 shots and 16 of 17 free throws and added 14 rebounds and seven assists as the Bucks rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit. Brook Lopez added 29 points for the Bucks. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 35 points and Malik Beasley had 26 against his former team. Detroit's Ron Holland II was fouled by Antetokounmpo with one second left in regulation and the score tied at 111, but Holland missed both free throws. Antetokounmpo made every basket for Milwaukee in the first quarter, hitting 7 of 10 field-goal attempts and all eight of his free throws for 22 of the team’s 24 points.

There was no shortage of high-scoring affairs in the NBA on Wednesday. Three players scored at least 45 points -- Victor Wembanyama, Karl-Anthony Towns and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Two of those stars (Wembanyama and Antetokounmpo) had 50 points, including a career-high from the San Antonio Spurs center. The three 45-point games is tied for the most in a single day in NBA history and it marks just the seventh day with as many. March 14, 2022 is the last time it happened when Towns (60), Trae Young (46) and Stephen Curry (47) each dropped 45 points. Wembanyama led the Spurs to 139-130 victory over the Washington Wizards. Antetokounmpo put the Milwaukee Bucks over the top 127-120 in overtime against the Detroit Pistons. Towns' big game wasn't enough as the New York Knicks fell to the Chicago Bulls 124-123. Prior to Wednesday, there had been only three 45-point games this season: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (45), Paolo Banchero (50) and Tyrese Maxey (45). Wembanyama and Banchero -- who just turned 22 on Tuesday -- are linked in league history. This is the first season that a pair of players age 21 or younger scored 50 points in a game in NBA history. The only other season this occurred was in 2006 and LeBron James accounted for both games.

NBA MVP Ladder
1. Anthony Davis, Los Angeles Lakers
Season stats: 32.6 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 1.7 bpg
His case: Nobody had a better start to 2024-25 than Davis, who put up big numbers and devoured opposing centers through the first few weeks. He seems famished, as if he … never won MVP before? This opening run ranks with the best stretches we’ve ever seen from Davis. He’s leading the league in scoring and doing it at both ends.
2. Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics
Season stats: 30.2 ppg, 7 rpg, 4.8 apg
His case: He’s giving off vibes of a player on a redemption tour. That’s strange for someone who won an NBA championship and Olympic gold medal in three summer months. But, he wasn’t awarded Finals MVP and was benched twice in the Paris Games, so maybe on the inside, Tatum burns a bit.
We know this much: Tatum is dropping 3-balls at a personal-best pace (4.2 makes on 11.4 attempts per game). He’s spearheading the offense-happy Celtics as his game looks sharp and so does his team.
3. Nikola Jokić, Denver Nuggets
Season stats: 28.8 ppg, 13.5 rpg, 11 apg
His case: He was the league’s most impactful player last season and therefore won MVP for the third time and nothing has changed so far. The Joker is averaging a triple-double. He’s top-five in scoring, rebounds and assists. He’s a handful, basically, once again.
The difference is that the Nuggets are struggling (or were initially). That’s not all on Jokić though, and it’s early. The gap between his No. 3 spot and No. 1 — a place in which he’s familiar — can close quickly.
4. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder
Season stats: 26 ppg, 6 rpg, 6.8 apg
His case: His team is winning and he’s producing. Usually, that’s the recipe for MVP success and of all the players in this top-five, Gilgeous-Alexander brings the best of those credentials.
Both must hold up over the next few months to give him an edge, and all signs are positive so far. He dropped 28 points with eight assists and seven rebounds in the opener against Jokić, which was a telling start.
5. Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland Cavaliers
Season stats: 23.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.1 apg
His case: Much like Gilgeous-Alexander, Mitchell benefits from a solid start individually with the bonus of being on a conference leader. His 30.2 mpg are the fewest of his career and yet his production per minute is stellar.
Mitchell is worth watching if the Cavaliers remain afloat in the East attic. With the Sixers and Bucks stumbling and needing a few weeks to catch up, the Cavs could be Boston’s biggest threat between now and Christmas. If Mitchell continues to deliver as a playmaker, it’s very possible.
The Next Five:
6. Kevin Durant, Phoenix Suns
7. Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves
8. Luka Dončić, Dallas Mavericks
9. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks
10. Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers
